August 28, 2008

Travel to Marietta, Georgia Site of muster of 40th, 41st, 42nd, 43rd and 52nd Georgia Infantry

12:00 Noon to 5:00 P.M.  G.B.S.H.H.A. Registration Main Lobby Marietta Conference Center Register and meet with other G.B.S.H.H.A. members. Conference Center is on site of Georgia Military Institute in 1862.

7:00 P.M. - 8:00P.M. Welcome/ Mixer Old members greet new members and receive printed details on upcoming events. Refreshments.

August 29, 2008  Friday

8:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Visit museum, movie, book store. Sherman’s march to Atlanta was halted here for two weeks. Direct frontal assault against dug in CSA troops was defeated. Cannon and original earthworks can be seen. Tour various outdoor locations as interest and physical ability allow. Study use of critical terrain by defending forces. Transportation by private car to Visitor Center.

10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. Travel to Kolb’s Farm battle site. Tour where Stewart and Stovall’s brigade supported this attack. Tour led by Michael Griggs Follow general trace of seven mile battle line for orientation of terrain and vegetation. Return to Kennesaw Mountain along battle line starting from Stovall’s position on left flank where he received a demonstration .

12:00 P.M. to 1: P.M. Box lunch in area, probably at Visitor Center with restrooms.

1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Camp Mc Donald location in Kennesaw and Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History. Barton’s brigade mustered and trained here. Great Locomotive Race started here. Our regiments passed through here by train going north to Chattanooga, twice, and south to Vicksburg. Learn about period railroads and their use in troop and equipment transport. Tour led by Kay Borden. Transportation by private car.

7:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. Conference Center Room _______________. Historian reports. Display of historic documents, pictures, letters and artifacts including new research by members.

August 30., 2008 Saturday

8:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. Travel to and visit the site of battles of Ruff’s Mill, Smyrna and Chattahoochee River line.View terrain and vegetation along Nickajack Creek. Intense fighting in this area from July 4 - 10, 1864. Tour led by 40th Georgia Historian and Marietta resident Kay Borden. Transportation by charter bus.

11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Box Lunch at covered picnic area along Nickajack Creek on Hood’s positions.

12:30 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. Travel to Dallas, GA Left flank of CSA line and center of Paulding County where companies of 40th and 41st Georgia were recruited.

1:00 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. New Hope Church. Travel from Dallas to site of battle on May 25-26, 1864 where Stovall’s brigade was posted in the cemetery and repulsed four attacks. Tour led by Michael Griggs

1:30 P.M. to 1:45 P.M. Travel to Pickett’s Mill Battlefield One of the best preserved in the nation. Stovall’s brigade was not in this battle on May 27, 1864, but they were in the area and these trenches are typical of defensive fortifications they would have used.

1:45 P.M. to 3:45 P.M. Pickett’s Mill Battlefield Walking tour of heavy fighting locations in dense forest and brush at close range --typical of fighting along this line-- via trail system.

3:45 P.M to 4:00 P.M. Return to hotel.

7:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. Dinner and Guest Speaker Enjoy “no host “ dinner , featuring keynote Dinner Speaker _____________ on the topic of __________-. Mr. __________-is _________-of ______________. Door prizes.Awards.

August 31, 2008  Sunday

8:00 A.M. to 10:00A.M. Travel to Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta . Many of the sick and wounded Confederate troops that had been transported to Atlanta area hospitals are buried here. Nine 40th Georgia, 20 41st Georgia, ten 42nd Georgia, 57 43rd Georgia and 30 52nd Georgia soldiers are known to be buried here. A total of 2,400 Southern soldiers repose here. Location of famous Lion of the South carving of a lion holding a fallen Confederate flag in it’s jaws,while grieving for unknown Confederate dead.

10:00A.M. Be at hotel.

10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. For those who have the time, travel to and decorate graves at Marietta Confederate Cemetery. More than 3,000 Confederate soldiers are buried here. This cemetery is essentially across the road from our hotel.

This concludes the formal G.B.S.H.H.A. Marietta Congress tours. We now encourage you to continue your visit as your time and personal interest dictates. Other suggested personal tour sites include : (a) Brumby Hall and Gardens Home of Georgia Military Institute Superintendent (b) Kennesaw House Sherman’s headquarters on July 3, 1864 Yankee raiders met here the night before they stole The General in April, 1862. (c) Battle of Allatoona Pass Exit 283 on I-75 (d) Booth Western Art Museum Famous painters Troiani and Kunstler . Exit 288 on I-75 in downtown Cartersville.

Afternoon and Evening Free and Travel Home Safely.

Please plan to attend our Eighth Annual G.B.S.H.H.A. Congress in Tupelo, Mississippi. Site of winter re-organization following Nashville, march route from Florence, Alabama toward Nashville, Corinth battlefield and Tupelo encampment.
